2.1. Moving to UVA Academic Microsoft 365 Email and Tools

Moving to UVA Academic Microsoft 365 Email & Tools

In July 2024, UVA Wise will transition to Microsoft 365 email and apps in the UVA Academic environment. More details related to this transition will be posted to this web page and communicated to you through email in the coming weeks.

Why are we moving to UVA Academic Microsoft 365?

Currently, only our students have access to Microsoft 365 apps. With this upgrade, our entire community will benefit from a modern toolset that significantly enhances collaboration through a single, secure platform. Along with Outlook Online for email, we will gain access to integrated Microsoft 365 tools like OneDrive, Teams, Excel, Power BI, and more. Joining Microsoft 365 in the Academic environment will enable our faculty, staff, and students to collaborate both within UVA Wise and across the University.

When is the transition happening?

UVA Wise email, OneDrive, Teams, and SharePoint accounts will begin transitioning on July 19 and finish by July 22.

If you are unable to log in to your UVA Wise inbox during this time, your new account is likely ready for you to use. First, try logging in to your new Microsoft 365 account using your UVA Wise email password and new “ComputingID@virginia.edu” username. If you are still unable to log in, contact UVA Wise Technology Support Services.

What is changing?

  • Email Address: Your UVA Wise email address will remain the same. You will continue to send and receive emails at your “ComputingID@uvawise.edu” email address.
  • Login Credentials: Your Microsoft 365 login name will change to “ComputingID@virginia.edu” (your password will remain the same).
  • Emails and Files: All existing emails and files will be copied to your new Microsoft 365 account.
  • Email Inbox: Once your new Outlook inbox is available, you will no longer have access to your old inbox.
  • Teams and SharePoint: If you have Teams and SharePoint sites, they will move to your new account.
  • OneDrive: If you have OneDrive, it will have a new account name/profile.
  • More Microsoft apps: Now everyone at UVA Wise will have access to Microsoft 365 apps and can collaborate with faculty, staff, and students across the University.

What do I need to do to prepare for this transition?

Until the transition is complete, you will have access to your current email as usual, but we ask that you only perform basic email activities, such as sending and receiving email.

To ensure a smooth transition, it is critical that you:

  • Do not delete or change (move, rename, etc.) anything in your mailbox, including emails, folders, contacts, or any part of your email profile.
  • Delete any inbox rules that move or alter existing emails in your inbox (excluding new, incoming emails).
  • Stop syncing OneDrive to your desktop until you have access to your new account.
  • Follow any instructions in future emails related to this transition.

What if I already have an email account in Academic Microsoft 365?

You will still have access to your existing account. Your UVA Wise inbox content will be copied over to a folder in your Academic inbox. Please wait until the transition is complete to change anything within this new folder.

How do I log in to my new account?

You can log in to your new Microsoft 365 account after the transition is complete on July 22. You will continue to have access to your current inbox until your new email account is ready to use.

However, some will transition before others. If you are unable to access your account between July 19 – 22, try logging in to your new Microsoft 365 account using your UVA Wise email password and new “ComputingID@virginia.edu” username.

If you are still unable to log in, contact UVA Wise Technology Support Services.

Who do I contact with questions?

Contact UVA Wise Technology Support Services with questions related to the transition or your Microsoft 365 email or apps account.
